Personal brand: get chosen for who you are

In a neighborhood business, the brand is often you. How to show who's behind it, what to say and where, to build trust and get recommended.

  1. What it is and why it matters

Your personal brand is what people think and say about you when you're not around. In a small business, customers don't buy from a company: they buy from the person they know, the one who answers their WhatsApp and solves their problem.

It's not about becoming an influencer. It's about letting people who look you up see someone real, who knows what they're doing and can be trusted.

  2. Decide what you want people to say about you

Answer three questions, one sentence each:

    • What do you do, and for whom?
    • What sets you apart from others doing the same nearby?
    • Why do you do it? Your story, in two lines

Those answers are the base for everything you show.

  3. Show your face

A well-lit, smiling photo of you is worth more than any logo. Use it on your Google profile, WhatsApp Business, social media and website.

Show your team and your workplace too. People want to know who they'll open the door to or talk to.

  4. Be the same everywhere

The same name, photo, colors and way of speaking on Google, Instagram, WhatsApp and your website. If each place says something different, people doubt it's the same business.

  5. Share what you know

The best way to show you know your trade is to teach something useful. You don't need to produce a lot: one post a week is enough if it's steady. Some ideas:

    • How you work, behind the scenes
    • The before and after of a job
    • Answers to the questions you always get
    • Simple tips from your trade
    • Customer stories, always with their permission
  6. Let others speak for you

What your customers say weighs more than what you say. Ask for Google reviews and reply to all of them: our guide on reviews explains how.

  7. Common mistakes

    • Posting only offers and prices: it gets tiring, and nobody remembers you
    • Copying another business: people notice, and you look like just one more
    • Starting strong and giving up after two weeks: an idle account looks like a closed business
    • Mixing your private life with the business without thinking: be human, but choose what to share
